Duped: How to Spot a Fake Online
Sunday May 17th 2009, 7:37 pm
Filed under: Interwebs, Fashion, Tip of the Day

True story: I once got effed by someone on craigslist selling what I believed at the time to be an authentic designer handbag. I paid $300 and when I found it was a fake, I tried to return it to my shady seller, but found myself face to face with her scary boyfriend, who told me that I “got what I paid for” and it wasn’t his fault I couldn’t afford a real bag. Needless to say, things got messy and I ended up broke and feeling like an idiot.

Judging by all the teenage girls toting obviously fake Louis Vuitton and Chanel Cambons around downtown, I’m pretty sure I’m not the only one who this has happened to, so I want to share my tips for not getting screwed out of your cash when looking for a new summer bag.

If you’re thinking of buying a purse online, here are a few things to watch out for.

- Claims like “I got this as a gift” and “It’s my sister’s and I’m selling it for her. She has so many bags!” are red flags. First of all, who turns down a designer gift, and second, this allows the seller to claim ignorance on the authenticity of the bag. “I think it’s real. I got it as a birthday present.” LIES.

- If the seller straight up tells you they are unsure if the bag is fake or not, it is, and they know that.

- If the price seems to goo to be true, it probably is. Designer bags don’t go down in value. A Chanel 2.55 that was $2500 5 years ago is still going to be worth $2500 today. Even if a bag is for sale for $300, be wary.

- Request a serial number and run it against a list of known fakes. “Serial number on tag matches one on card” does not guarantee the bag is authentic.

and finally…
- “100% authentic leather Fendi handbag” What’s wrong with this sentence? It says “authentic leather” and not “authentic Fendi.” This is a nasty trick I’ve seen on a few craigslist postings. Watch out.

Have you ever been tricked into buying a fake bag?

Neon Bible Wants You!
Sunday April 19th 2009, 12:24 pm
Filed under: Interwebs, Makeup, Reviews, Vancouver, For Men

In order to keep Neon Bible’s updates as frequent as possible, I’ve decided to look for another blogger to join the team. While I write mainly about fashion, Neon Bible is still in essence, a beauty blog and I need someone to help me cover that particular content area. I’m looking to add at least one new blogger to the website, if not two.

What I’m looking for:
- Someone to write about and review makeup and other beauty products (this includes hair, skin care, perfume, nails etc.)
- Someone interested in covering men’s grooming products
- Someone interested in reviewing beauty books
- Someone who can contribute at least one blog entry a week
- Someone who enjoys not only beauty, but writing, and writing with a little humor

Assets:
- Someone who lives in the lower mainland would be great, but isn’t a requirement. Part of this blog’s focus is Vancouver beauty/fashion/shopping and it would be cool to have a team member who knows the area and knows where you can buy particular products locally.
- Someone with a big arsenal of beauty products that they could review

What you get:
- Exposure (especially in Vancouver if that’s where you’re living)
- The occasional product to review
- A new friend! (I mean… I’m not that pathetic, really.)

If you’re interested in joining my fun little team, please email me for further information.

Happy Birthday to Me!

Today is Neon Bible’s 1st birthday as a beauty and fashion blog and I am very excited. I’ve had this domain for several years, and others before that, but I had been using the site in other ways. But today marks one year since I turned this space into a blog about fashion, beauty and more recently, the city of Vancouver, which turned out to be a great decision.

While Neon Bible may not qualify for the upper echelons of beauty blogs, it has given me some great opportunities to meet people, talk about stuff that I love and develop fans. There have even been as few free products along the way, of which I am very grateful for.

Unfortunately I don’t have a cake to share with all of you who have supported the site on this very special occasion, but I do have a cookie recipe! Little known fact is that I’m obsessed with baking, especially around Spring (for reasons I can’t explain). While these are technically my Easter cookies, today they’re going to be Neon Bible Birthday cookies, and they will blow your mind.

Neon Bible Birthday Cookies

1 cup butter
3/4 cup white sugar
3/4 cup brown sugar
2 eggs
1 tsp vanilla
2 1/4 cup flour
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp salt
1 cup oatmeal
1 1/2 cups crushed mini eggs OR 1 1/4 cup whole mini mini eggs

Preheat the over to 375 degrees. Mix the flour, salt and baking soda together. Seperatly mix the butter, sugar until creamy (I reccomend microwaving them together for 30 seconds). Add the vanilla and eggs. Blend the wet and dry ingredients together. Add the oatmeal and mini eggs.

Place your lil’ cookie balls on an ungreased cookie sheet and stick a mini egg on top.
Bake for 10-12 minutes.

Enjoy!

Neon Bible on CBC

Today was an exciting day in Neon Bible day. I was featured as a “fashion expert” on CBC Radio 3’s Fashion Fight Club episode. We talked about Vancouver’s fashion faux pas, and I continued to defend my UGG’s which are totally awesome by the way. Then there was some stuff about hobos. It’s actually a little disturbing how many times homeless people have come up during my radio career (few of you may remember the dreaded Devon Soltendieck interview *shudder*).

Luckily, Paul over at A Good Day for Airplay recorded my interview, so if you missed it, you can download it HERE

Do you agree with my picks for “fashion crimes?” Do you still hate UGG Boots even though they’re awesome?
