Bare Brows

About six months ago I decided it was time to grow out my thin little brows and turn them into the thick and sexy brows that were becoming so popular.

The problem? I’ve been tweezing and waxing my brows since I was 13 and as a result, six months later, I’m still trying to grow my brows in. Although they’re not ready to stand on their own yet, I have made progress, but I still need to fill them in every morning. I use a Cover Girl eyeliner, in a colour that is about a shade lighter than my actual brow colour, and then on top I use a Sephora brand clear eyebrow gel to keep the in place. It can get frustrating.

Today I spotted an ad for Anastasia Brow Enhancing Serum that promises eyebrow growth and health in 4-6 weeks for the low low price of $40 Canadian. Of course right away I thought I MUST HAVE THIS and started rearranging my finances for the week. Then came a brief moment of clarity.

It’s products like this that make me question my makeup obsession. I see it, I read about it, I want it, and then I stop and think wtf? Do I actually need a brow growing serum? Do I really need a brush that separates my eyelashes, or blue mascara, or $30 lip gloss? Shouldn’t I be spending money on something more useful or productive? Of course this moment of consciousness usually fades pretty quickly and I slip back into my NARS induced coma for a few more weeks.

Do you ever have these moments of makeup consumer clarity?

Haulin’ It

Next weekend I’m making my final trip to Toronto before I head back to Vancouver, which means making my last trip to Sephora before I had back to a city that doesn’t have one. This means haul time. Of course I can’t discount the as a student I’m currently trying to survive on a $300 a month allowance from my mom, which means I have to be picky.

My current choices are:

A Shu Uemura eyelash curler. I’ve never had one, and I feel like its a right of passage for the makeup obsessed. - $18

Nars lip gloss in either Orgasm or Chihauhau. Orgasm is a great colour, but I kind of really really love chihauhaus.  But then again, I also really love… nevermind. - $24

TheBalm Time Balm concealer to replace my garbage Cover Girl concealer. Lesson learned - don’t skimp on concealer. - $17

Bare Escentuals angled blush brush. Another lesson learned, a ratty old Mac brush, no matter how badly it needs to be replaced, is still better than a brand new 5 dollar brush. Again, not something to skimp on. - $15

Other items I desperatly want but may have to wait include some Clinique SuperBalm, Bliss FatGirlSleep, Philosophy Hope in a Jar, some Carol’s Daughter swag, Oscar Blandi Dry Shampoo, Urban Decay Big Fatty Mascara in Electric Blue, some Stilla lip glaze, and Benefit High Brow.

For those gifted enough to have a Sephora in their town, any suggestions? Have you tried these products? Are they worth the cash?

I Want This Look

Lindsay Lohan is so two years ago. My current fashion icon is the always original, and always slightly scary Mary-Kate. I would be lying if I said i didn’t spend hours procrastinating online at Olsen-Fan.net looking at pictures and jotting down what she’s wearing on my “Thing I Want” list.

Her current look that I’m obsessing over is the chic grunge look, which could also be called I spent the night with my boyfriend, then stole his shirt, and now I’m just going to Starbs and running errands and looking sweet doing it look.

In order to get this look, I have added to my “Things I Want” list, the following items: Shiny black leggings from American Apparel, Black opaque tights, fun bracelets and rings from Ardene, and a “boyfriend” shirt from Urban Outfitters. So basically everything.

What do you think of Mary-Kate’s style?

True Patriot Love

Canada Day is fast approaching, and for many patriotic East coasters, that means a midnight bus to Ottawa, our nation’s capital. Over on the West coast, Canada Day is something that is celebrated very weakly if at all (We hate the rest of Canada), so while I’m out East, I’ve decided to celebrate Canada’s birthday in true Ontario style. I’ve already made a dress out of the Canadian flag (okay I just wrapped it around me, pinned it and put on a belt), and now I’m making my red and white makeup choices. On the nails I’ll be rocking Pirate by Chanel, a bright, pinkyish Red, and on the lips its going to be Port Red from Mac’s Naughty Nauticals collection, a coraly frost which flatters ever the most discerning skin tones. It doesn’t wash me out, or make me look like I have a cold. It’s just… red.

What are your plans for Canada day?

What I’m Wearing

I recently grabbed some Clinique Superbalm after reading some rave reviews and I’m here to offer up another.  This gloss is the shiz.  It moisturizes, comes in great colours, and isn’t the least bit sticky.  Best of all, it stays on, holding up to my very own drowning of the sorrows in Betty Crocker icing while standing alone in the kitchen wearing only a pair of extra large Today Show boxers and a promotional tank top from the movie 21.  I mean what?

Superbalm is available at Sephora and most drug stores for $13.50.
