Vancouver Store Profile: Gravity Pope

Gravity Pope

Gravity Pope is my go to shoe store on the West Side.   The carry tons of great high and low brands, and unlike Brown’s the staff is approachable, and doesn’t give you evil eye. The setup in the store is very “pick up” friendly.  Shoes are scrunched together side by side at coffee table height, which gives you the feeling that you’re hunting for gems at a flea market… an upscale, Marc Jacobs carrying flea market.

Some of the brands you’ll find at Gravity Pope:

  • Calvin Klein
  • Michael Kors
  • Marc Jacobs
  • Converse
  • Vivienne Westwood
  • Frye
  • Adidas and Stella McCartney

I’ve been eying a pair of Vivienne Westwood flats since before Christmas.  They’re on sale for $115, and I feel like I have no excuse now not to buy them.  Behold:

Gravity Pope is located at 2205 west 4th ave.  And hey, when you’re done shopping, you can head over to 49th Parallel for a cap and a decadent twice baked almond croissant that I swear will change your life.

Look I’m Hating: Jessica Biel at the Oscars

Yesterday I talked about how much I was loving Natalie Portman’s young, sexy Oscar look, and now I think it’s time to focus on my most hated fashion crime of the evening, the one committed by Jessica Biel.

jessica-biel-oscars-2009.jpg

First of all, what is she even doing at the Oscars? She hasn’t made a watchable movie since Blade: Trinity, which came out five years ago and wasn’t even legitimately good, it was “so bad it’s awesome” good. On to her look. Her hair looks like she got caught in the rain on the way to the show. It’s flat as hell, and also boring. The Oscars is all about glamor, not frump. And when I saw this dress, okay, I’m just saying, but my mind went straight to Episode 2×20 of the X-Files - “Humbug.”

The similarities are undeniable. And I can’t be the only X-Files loving, Oscar watching person out there that thought this. What is with the out of place bubble on the dress? It’s a big mess and very suspicious. What are you hiding in there, Jessica Biel? A fetus in fetu?

jessicahumbug.jpg

Just like the fetal twin in the X-Files, it emerges every night from Jessica’s side, but instead of murdering circus folks, it goes into people’s homes and forces them to watch Summer Catch. The horror!

Look I’m Loving: Natalie Portman at the Oscars

Aside from American Idol’s group week, the Academy Awards is the TV event that I look forward to most every year. The speeches, the musical numbers, the movie clips, and of course the fashion.

While her dress didn’t stand out to me, I found Natalie Portman’s makeup to be the best of the night. It was sexy, young and included one product that I already own, which is rare and awesome.

To create this look, Stila makeup artist Jeanine Lobell used entirely Chanel:

Chanel Silky Eye Shadow Duo in Orient Expres, $40 USD
Intense Eye Pencil in Noir, $27, inside the eye
Black Inimitable Mascara, $30
Perfect Brows in Brun, $65
Powder Blush in Narcisse, $42
Glossimer in Galactic, $27

I don’t know about you, but I don’t really have like, $300 to spend on a “look.” If you’re looking for a few alternatives might I suggest:

L’Oreal Hip Duo in Charisma
Maybelline Unstoppable Eyeliner in Onyx
L’Oréal Telescopic Mascara
Cover Girl Brow and Eyemakers in Midnight Brown
Mac Blush in Well Dressed

In terms of the Galactic gloss, it’s hard to think of a drugstore alternative. Can you think of any?

What was your favourite look of the Oscars?

My Weight Watchers Adventure Part I
Monday February 23rd 2009, 4:22 pm

Four days ago, I unofficially joined Weight Watchers. Unofficially because one, I don’t weigh enough to actually join, and two, even if I did I probably couldn’t afford it. Instead, I had a “source” of mine, a lifetime member, go pick up a bunch of literature for me.

I decided that I was going to attempt to the points program. To begin, you enter your height, weight, age, gender and how much activity you get in a day into the points calculator and it pumps out your personal daily points limit. Mine is 21.

After reading through the booklets, I was shocked to find out how many points, or calories are in foods that we eat every day. It was a little disturbing actually.

Here are a few of the most deadly foods out there:

  • Burger King Whopper with Cheese - 17 points
  • Dairy Queen Chicken Strips with NO sauce - 20 points
  • Dairy Queen Medium Skor Blizzard - 22 effing points
  • 1 quarter of a medium - large Dominos pizza - 13-17 points
  • Earl’s Cajun Chicken Sandwich (which I often get) - 19 points
  • Earl’s Penne Alfredo - 39 points
  • Subway 6 inch Tuna Sub - 12 points
  • Timmy Ho’s Muffins - 6-10 points
  • White Spot Legendary Burger - 20 points
  • White Spot Milkshake - 19 points
  • Costco Muffin - 10 points

Disturbing, no? The average Vancouverite eats at White Spot like, twice a month. And any true White Spot diner knows that the Legendary Burger is best thing on the menu. At least the pickle is 0 points, right? Sigh…
But there are some restaurant foods out there that aren’t so bad, as well as stuff around the house that is surprisingly healthy. For example:

  • Timmy Ho’s Chicken Noodle Soup - 2 points
  • Swiss Chalet Quarter Chicken - 5 points
  • Earl’s Chicken Strips - 8 points
  • Subway 6 inch Turkey sub - 5 points
  • McDonald’s Snack Wrap - 6 points
  • 6 pieces of Maki sushi or 4 Nigiri - 2 points
  • 3 pieces of Gyoza - 3 points
  • 8 pieces of Melba Toast - 2 points
  • Orville Redenbacher Smart Pop - 1 point
  • English Muffins - 2 points

You would be surprised how quickly you can go through 21 points. A lot of the points program seems to be about portion size. For example, one bowl of chilli during the Acadamy Awards = 5 points, not so bad. Two bowls = 10 points. Very bad. The program also tries to deter you from useless snacking, which I’m a victim off. A piece of bread here, 3 bowls of cereal there. It adds up. But then there are always activity points.

Even if my diet doesn’t work (of course I’m hoping it does), my eyes have definitely been opened to the dangers of eating in restaurants. I’m now looking back to Dine Out and the delectable bacon vinaigrette… ugh, I don’t want to think about it.

As my points diet continues, I will keep you updated on my progress, or lack of progress. I’m excited to see how it turns out.
