Bare Escentuals bareMinerals Foundation

So, I’m probably going to get lynched for this review but here we go…

I decided to hop on the mineral powder foundation bandwagon a couple of months ago, and I thought if I was going to make the switch I would go with the best: Bare Escentuals.  For the first two weeks I used the minerals with a regular powder brush, and not with the Buki Brush like you’re supposed to.  The problem I had with this method is that the powder just didn’t blend well and you could really see how much makeup I was wearing.  A few people at work even commented that I had been wearing more makeup than usual.  That was when I decided to suck it up and buy the right brush.

It should also be noted that there is in fact a “correct” way to apply mineral foundation that I was unaware of initially.  Expert Village has a set of video how-tos that I found helpful; you can find them here.

After I started using the Buki Brush (I bought the Handy Buki Brush from Bare Escentuals because it was the cheapest at $20), I did see a difference.  The minerals blended better, and my skin really did look smooth and perfectly even.  Still though, my major issue is that it looked (and felt) like you were wearing more makeup than usual.  From far away, and in photos, my skin looked amazing.  Up close though, you could actually see the powder and I’m not into that.

My recommendation is that if you are someone who finds that liquid foundation or concealer sinks into crevices in their skin, mineral powder may prove to be a good option because it kind of creates a layer over top of your face.  Just make sure you use the right brush!!

If you already have pretty smooth skin, mineral powder, at least for me, was too heavy and much more visible than any liquid foundation.

Bare Escentuals products are available at Sephora, and the basic mineral foundation retails for about $25.  They also offer a number of starter kits, which include foundation, brushes, blush and other things.  They’re a pretty good deal, so if you’re serious about the minerals, they’re worth a look.

Now I know a lot of people love mineral foundation, so have you tried it?  If so, did you like it?  Comments are welcome!

I love mineral foundation, especially in the summer. A little bit goes a long way though. The way that I apply it is bit by bit, letting it settle for a little while before deciding whether to add a second dusting to certain areas. At first, it may not seem like enough coverage but for me at least, the powder melts into the skin and disappears into a flawless finish regardless of how close you’re looking. Try using a bit less and really blending it in. And do you have really dry skin? Make sure to moisturize well and let the moisturizer sink in before applying. Hope this helps! :)

I’ve only tried Laura Mercier’s mineral foundation and I really liked it. I agree with you, if applied sloppily it can look really cakey and patchy on the skin. I didn’t buy the recommended kabuki brush and used one of my Wal-Mart powder brushes, and it worked fine. Have you tried the Bare Minerals Matte one yet?

I had been having the same problem with the bareminerals foundation, but recently got a free sample of the bareminerals matte foundation from sephora, which seems to have eliminated the “too much makeup” look. I noticed with the original formula that my face would get a sheen to it when I put on regular bareminerals, but it doesn’t do that anymore.

Bare Minerals also has an ingredient, bismuth oxychloride, that can be irritating to sensitive skin like mine. I’ve tried it several times and my skin itches so badly I can’t wear it. Disappointing as I know the line works for many other people.

Wow, I’m really surprised at this review, not because I’m out to lynch anybody:) but because it is an honest make up review! One that I found completely helpful…I’ve added you to my reader!

I actually agree with you here. I wanted SO MUCH to like my bare minerals foundation but no matter how I applied it, how much I applied, what I used under it, I couldn’t get it to look like I’ve got that “flawless” look. You could always see that I’ve got powder on.

Another thing that really irritated me was the fact that within a couple of hours of applying it, my face would look like an oil spill had happened! I’m not sure why as I don’t have oily skin at all. Very annoying.

Oh, and I have very red cheeks. Something that Bare Minerals had promised to address and help improve the condition of. No deal. No matter how many layers I buffed on, my cheeks were red as ever and would cake again in a couple of hours. Also did not help with soothing the redness.
